Finding a nice beach has become almost an obsession among nationals who boast of knowing the best places in your country. There are some beaches south of Lima, Punta Hermosa, San Bartolo and Asia, but the real gems are found along the north coast. Although Mancora and Tumbes, are undoubtedly the beach destinations in the end to visit in Peru, is a quieter place that would surprise most travelers: Huanchaco.
Huanchaco has a population of nearly 42,000 people and is located only 12 kilometers (8 miles) outside Trujillo. As such it is an ideal place to plan to stay for your travel plans to Peru if you want to be in town during the day but sleep near the beach at night. The beach town has retained its small size makes hundreds of years, and locally made reed boats are their icons. The boats, called totora horses (which means "horses" in Spanish) are made of long, strong, dark yellow-reeds that grow near coastal water, and continue doing as they were centuries ago.
